Low Testosterone Q & A

What causes low testosterone?

Some men have low testosterone (Low-T), and others have testosterone deficiency syndrome (TD). Low testosterone happens for several reasons. The most common causes include:

Genetics

You can be born with a condition, such as Klinefelter or Noonan syndrome, autoimmune disease, or metabolic disorders, that causes low testosterone.

Medication

Some medications lower the amount of testosterone your body produces, including chemotherapy, opioids, and antidepressants.

Injury

Testicular damage and head trauma can both cause testosterone deficiency syndrome.

Illness or disease

Infection, HIV or AIDS, and some chronic conditions can affect your testosterone levels.

Age

Testosterone levels start to naturally decline after age 30 and continue to drop at a rate of roughly 2% each year.

Lifestyle

An unhealthy lifestyle and habits, such as obesity, extreme weight loss, alcohol abuse, and steroid abuse, can contribute to a faster-than-average testosterone level decline.

Men may also experience low testosterone when their testicles do not produce normal levels of testosterone, a condition known as hypogonadism. You may develop hypogonadism from testicular injuries, metabolic disorders, cancer treatments, and other health risks.

What are the symptoms of low testosterone?

Many people are familiar with sexual function issues as being a symptom of low testosterone, but there are several other symptoms you should be aware of. Signs of Low-T include:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced or low sex drive
  • Irritability
  • Loss of body or facial hair
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Increase in body fat
  • Loss of muscle mass

Many of these symptoms could also be linked to other health conditions, so it is important that you see Dr. Cosgrove to ensure they are not signs of something more serious.

How is low testosterone treated?

Dr. Cosgrove will test your testosterone levels to determine the most appropriate treatment. If your levels are less than 300 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) and you do not have any conflicting health issues, testosterone therapy (TT) could work for you.

TT is available in topical, injectable, and oral forms. Dr. Cosgrove also uses Testosterone pellets that he implants under your skin. The pellets release a steady dose of testosterone for several months at the exact level you need.

If you have a condition such as varicoceles, Dr. Cosgrove might need to perform minimally invasive surgery. Non-surgical treatments, such as exercise, stress management, and lifestyle changes, can also play a part in raising your testosterone levels.

After thoroughly explaining your options, Dr. Cosgrove can help you decide what course of treatment is best for your individual needs and lifestyle.

When you partner with Dr. Cosgrove, you can see your testosterone levels increase and even return to their previous levels. Call Advantage Urology today to request an appointment.
